Self-Determination

What if I want a service that is not available or does not exist?

This often happens. You should work closely with your family and friends, and with your Support Coordinator, to figure out if you can meet your goals by using a different kind of support. If the service you need does not exist, you could meet with a group of trusted family members, friends and professionals to come up with a creative solution that would allow you to make use of other resources. For example, you might be able to hire someone from your community to help you participate in a local community organization. Usually, it will be necessary to work with local and state agencies to make it possible for you to obtain the services you want. Be creative and you might find ways to use your resources to make new opportunities that others can share.
