Self-Determination
Why is Self-Determination Necessary?
Self-determination is necessary because too often those of us with disabilities do not have control over the simplest aspects of our lives. Others decide what we eat, where we live and with whom we associate. We depend on family, friends and professionals for the supports and services we need to live day to day. Often, we do not choose these supports and services. Professionals "assess" our needs and then attempt to match available resources to those needs. The results are often far from what we envision for ourselves.
